How Bone Glue Works:
Heat Activation
Bone glue typically comes in granules or flakes. To use it, it's first dissolved in hot water (around 60-70°C or 140-160°F) until it becomes a liquid gel.
Application
The warm liquid glue is applied to the wood surfaces to be joined. It penetrates the pores of the wood, increasing bond strength.
Bonding & Cooling
As the glue cools, it solidifies and forms a strong mechanical bond between the surfaces. The strength comes from the interlocking of glue molecules with the wood fibers.
Reversibility (a unique feature!)
Bone glue is water-soluble and reversible. This means it can be softened with heat and moisture, allowing joints to be reopened and repaired, which is ideal for antique furniture or musical instruments like violins and pianos.
